JOLT

JOLT

NCSY’s Jewish Overseas Leadership Training (JOLT) program provides an experience like no other. JOLT is an intense leadership program designed for truly exceptional high school teens. Past participants have described the JOLT experience as having a truly transformational impact on their identity as Jews and leaders of the Jewish people.

Past: Poland

JOLT will lead off their incredible journey with a life altering trip to Poland.  There, you will learn about the rich Jewish past on European soil, reflect on the enormity of the Holocaust and celebrate in a community reborn. JOLTers will have the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of our past and visit “kivrei tzaddikim”all while learning about our past and learning about what it means to be a Jewish leader.

Present: Denmark

JOLT will partner with the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation to create a camp for non-affiliated Jewish European children, and instill in the campers what it means to be a Jew. Here, JOLTers will hone in on their leadership skills and create and implement creative programming to instill the beauty of Torah into the lives of the campers; a once in a lifetime experience!

Future: Israel

While touring our breathtaking country, JOLTers will have the ability to relax and reflect on their experiences in Poland and Denmark. JOLTers will have ability to discuss with their peers and staff members about what it means to be a Jewish leader in today’s world, and how they can utilize their JOLT experience to make a difference in the Jewish world at large.

Reflections from JOLT participant Rebecca Ruben
July 29th, 2012 | JOLT | Comments |
NCSY JOLT Rebecca Ruben: Age 17 Portsmouth, New Hampshire Jewish inspiration is not something I have easy access to where I live. However, I can honestly say there has been constant inspiration on this trip everyday. There are no words to truly describe walking arm and arm out of the forest of Tykotcin alive. There are no words to truly express the feeling of relief once we were “done with death,” the feeling of ebbing-saying goodbye to Shabbas in the Krakow Square where so many people before us celebrated their Judaism. Most poignantly…

Reflections from JOLT participant Avi Colonomos
July 29th, 2012 | JOLT | Comments |
Avi Colonomos Atlanta, Georgia Three weeks into JOLT, our group is like a flame, constantly giving off light and eternally yearning to grow. This flame is strong and bright, and in the faces of all who try to destroy it, it stays alive. Even though this flame is fueled by pride and passion, it was born out of fear, confusion, and sadness. Just a few weeks ago, JOLT 2012 was divided. We arrived from as far away as southern California and as close as Queens. We all had our own level of knowledge about…

Shabbat Shalom from Camp Am Echad: Hartz, Germany
July 20th, 2012 | JOLT | Comments |
Dear Parents and friends,     We wanted to wish you a wonderful shabbat from Camp Am Echad. The JOLTER's are doing so well and are thriving in Camp Am Echad. The Am Echad staff are blown away by the motivation and creativity of the JOLTer's. We have connected with the campers from Germany and are learning from one another. It is very inspiring. The JOLTer's have created incredible programming for Camp Am Echad. Last night, we participated in Bar and Bat Mitzvah programs for those campers in Am Echad who never had a…

Video of Havdalah in the Krakow Square
July 15th, 2012 | JOLT | Comments |
We had a meaningful havdalah in the Krakow Square where the Jews of Warsaw used to end their Shabbat before the Holocaust. We had a crowd  because it was truly a sight to see.

Shabbat Shalom
July 13th, 2012 | JOLT | Comments |
Dear Jolt families and friends, We decided to finish our mourning today. In a week that has brought us from cemetery to ghetto, to mass grave, to concentration camp we experienced Auschwitz today and it was awful. Once again tears flowed with despair and fists clenched with anger as the appalling reality of a place that claimed over 2,000,000 of us was simply overwhelming. That is until we decided that we can choose to no longer be victims of this terrible place. Though our emotions this past week have certainly been casualties of the Holocaust…

July 11th- “The Worst Place on Earth”
July 11th, 2012 | JOLT | Comments |
While today was probably the toughest day of the whole, the day started out very nicely. We visited the town of Gur, former home to a strong branch of Chassidus. The group soaked in the messages of Chassidus, their goal to bring Judaism to the common man and not just the intellectual elite. Everyone split up into chaburot (groups) to learn with advisors about different topics, with some even learning new songs to sing! After that, the day took a very serious and painful turn, as we visited Majdanek. Majdanek was a work camp right outside the city…

July 10th- The Forest and the Trees
July 11th, 2012 | JOLT | Comments |
After going to bed at about 9pm on Monday night, everyone woke up fresh and ready for a jam-packed day. We hopped on the bus on our way to Tykocin, a small village north of Warsaw and the former home of a vibrant Jewish community. The Jewish cemetery of the town, a wide expanse just outside the village, now lays barren and overgrown, with no tombstones to even mark the graves. We proceeded to the village shul, a large chapel with many frescoed paintings still decorating the walls. Right in the shul, we proceeded to learn Torah, echoing the…

NCSY JOLT: Beginnings: July 6th-July 9th
July 11th, 2012 | JOLT | Comments |
NCSY JOLT started out in Staten Island on Friday, July 6th for an exciting shabbaton to introduce the exciting NCSY JOLT program. It was a wonderful weekend and it really broke the ice amongst the whole group, giving individuals the opportunity to forge real bonds and true unity. Shabbat was filled with lots of energy, divrei torah, great food, and a lot of singing. After Shabbat, we hopped on a bus and headed to Brooklyn for a real New York experience and good food. On Sunday morning, we arrived at the synagogue in Staten Island bright and early to…
