JOLT

JOLT

NCSY’s Jewish Overseas Leadership Training (JOLT) program provides an experience like no other. JOLT is an intense leadership program designed for truly exceptional high school teens. Past participants have described the JOLT experience as having a truly transformational impact on their identity as Jews and leaders of the Jewish people.

Past: Poland

JOLT will lead off their incredible journey with a life altering trip to Poland.  There, you will learn about the rich Jewish past on European soil, reflect on the enormity of the Holocaust and celebrate in a community reborn. JOLTers will have the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of our past and visit “kivrei tzaddikim”all while learning about our past and learning about what it means to be a Jewish leader.

Present: Austria

Based in the breathtaking Austrian Alps, JOLT will partner with the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation to create a camp for non-affiliated Jewish European children, and instill in the campers what it means to be a Jew. Here, JOLTers will hone in on their leadership skills and create and implement creative programming to instill the beauty of Torah into the lives of the campers; a once in a lifetime experience!

Future: Israel

While touring our breathtaking country, JOLTers will have the ability to relax and reflect on their experiences in Poland and Austria. JOLTers will have ability to discuss with their peers and staff members about what it means to be a Jewish leader in today’s world, and how they can utilize their JOLT experience to make a difference in the Jewish world at large.

7/28/12 -The names Michal and Channa will always be special to us as we gave two girls their Jewish names today. Their is a sadness creeping into the atmosphere among the Am-Echad children who have been to this camp before. They remember that tomorrow will bring the final Shabbat of the program and have already begun to tear up when talking about saying goodbye to the NCSY / JOLTers.   7/29/12 - We went to a ropes climbing course today after our final 5 kilometer hike in the Alps. Everyone is excited to make our final Shabbat…

Monday July 25th : We broke Color War today! It was not only Blue vs White but a perfect chance for informal education as the Maccabees were pitted against Tzahal as wel learned about the Jewish past and present. After a day of divrei Torah, hilarious skits and sophisticated dance moves we went to bed early after a job well done.   Tuesday July 26th: We began the day with a drive to Switzerland where we white water rafted for over 12 kilometers through the Swiss alps back into Austria. Upon returning we put on a program…

Friday July 22 Rabbi Steve Burg, International Director of NCSY, arrived this morning to spend Shabbat with us. He addressed us before lunch discussing the holistic way to view sefer Bamidbar and what that means to us as leaders. Later in the day the JOLTers put together a showcase for the Machane about the city of Tzfas where after a hysterical play the campers got to 'tour' the mystical city complete with food, crafts, and L'chaim (seltzer water we promise) stations.   We enjoyed a Shabbat dinner and oneg together and sang deep into the night.…

Our sincerest apologies for the delay in posting. We have been without internet access in Europe for several days now. Please enjoy the following pictures and recaps from the past week.   Sunday July 17th -- We were up at 5:00 AM on our travel day from Poland to Munich. The excitement was palpable as we left Poland to begin the next phase of our program, rebuilding the European Jewish world. After several flight delays we landed in Germany after nearly thirteen…

Poland Day 3

July 13th, 2011 Together we cried. Though we all new what we would encounter at Majdonic there is no way to properly prepare for the psychological trauma of a preserved death camp. Teens ran their fingers over the scratch marks etched in the stone and wood walls of the gas chambers and sobbed openly by heap of human ash. All that is left of a massacre that left 18,000 Jews dead in a two day period of particular horror. “But we had each-other to cry on,” was the sentiment echoed repeatedly by the group…

Poland Day 2
July 13th, 2011 | JOLT | Comments
Phase two of NCSY JOLT officially began tonight. After spending our first incredible Shabbat in Staten Island shifting our perspective from that of thirty-eight individuals to a single group we arrived, on no sleep, in Poland. On Monday we toured modern Warsaw and the Jewish world that once was. Today we began to focus specifically on the Holocaust. We visited the Treblinka Death camp and the town of Tiktin where we learned Torah by the Old Synagogue and traced the final path that its’ residents took in August of 1941 that ended in a mass…

Welcome to JOLT 2011/ Day 1 - Poland
July 11th, 2011 | JOLT | Comments
Welcome! After spending an amazing shabbat in Staten Island getting to know eachother, Sunday afternoon we hopped on a plane to Poland where we just settled in for the night at our lovely hotel in Warsaw. Our action packed day started off the minute we left the airport. Our first stop was to one of the only Jewish cemeterays left in Poland where we saw many famous grave sites like the Netziv, Adam Czerniakow, and the memorial site of Janusz Korczak. The entire group divided the entire book of Tehillim and said their assigned perakim at a mass…
