Tuesday, August 9 (Tisha B’Av)

Tisha B’Av is an intensely moving day on the NCSY Kollel. Kinnot took up the entire morning. Each kinnah is introduced by a Rebbe or madrich. These introductions allow the kinnah to be more accessible, and also highlight various key points in the day as a whole. Rav Schachter spoke immediately before the kinnot, and described the ways in which Tisha B’Av can be a catalyst for change and growth. In the middle of the morning, we heard from Rav Benjamin Yudin.

In the afternoon there was a lengthy break, and the screening of films and documentaries relating to the themes of the day.

Towards the end of the day, the group moved towards Yerushalayim. One bus began with some stops at Har Hamenuchot, and then everyone met up at the Kotel plaza. This has become a Kollel tradition, and is always one of the real highlights of the summer. By now there are quite a few Kotel regulars who await our arrival, and we also had many groups time their arrivals so that they could join us. The power of our circle, over 200 strong, singing so emotionally at that point in time and at that spot cannot be overstated. Not only was it an exclamation point on our Tisha B’Av observance, but it was an even that was sure to echo for a long time to come.
