Day 8: The Vatican and Eretz Yisrael

We woke up this morning to a special treat: Mrs. Lashak gave a fascinating class on the secret Jewish messages hidden in Michelangelo's art in the Sistene Chapel. This was particularly relevant today because we were going to the Vatican! After breakfast we departed for the Roman Colosseum. There, Rabbi Lashak told us about the inhumane brutalities that occurred there. We also saw the arch of Titus: a magnificent arch dedicated to Titus for his conquest of the Jews and the destruction of the temple. This arch represents so much horror for our people, that there is actually a rabbinical decree forbidding us from walking around or under it. In order to show the world that we are still here despite our enemies attempts to destroy us, we sang and danced near the colosseum "Am Yisrael Chai." It was quite an inspiring scene. After we left the Colosseum, we had lunch at a restaurant in the former Jewish ghetto and had the once in a lifetime opportunity to meet the Chief Rabbi of Romw, Rabbi Riccardo Di Segni. He told us a little bit about Roman and Italian Jewry and personally welcomed us to the community. After lunch, we went to the Vatican where we were incredibly allowed to enter immediately (most people visiting the Vatican have to wait in a 1 kilometer line). We toured through the Vatican museum and saw all sorts of incredible things from the rooms of Rafael to the Room of Maps. Finally, our tour climaxed at the Sistene Chapel where we were able to actually see the things we learned in Mrs. Lashak's class for ourselves. Touring the vatican was a truly amazing experience that really left us breathless. After leaving the Vatican, we went straight to dinner and then quickly hopped on the bus to run to the airport. We arrived in Israel at 3 am this morning and headed straight to the hotel. We can't wait to see where the next few weeks take us in the land of our people.
