Because today was a fast day, we took it pretty easy. We woke up later than usual and went to Yad Vashem, the most visited Holocaust museum in the world. We broke into two groups and each group went with a tour guide. Because there were so many people in the museum, we wore headphones that made it sound like our tour guide was standing right next to us. We went through the museum, really feeling the weightiness of the day. The 17th of Tammuz was the day that the Roman's surrounded the walls of the second Beit Hamikdash. Not only did our visit to Yad Vashem give our day a necessary seriousness and allow us to understand what it means to mourn for the Jewish people, but it also gave us hope that although we have so many enemies constantly trying to destroy us, we are still here. This idea was reinforced at the end of the museum where we left the suffocating and enclosed space and walked out onto a sunny platform overlooking Jerusalem. After Yad Vashem, we embarked on our long bus ride to the Golan, one of the most beautiful parts of Israel. We checked into the hotel in Hispin, and after breaking the fast with a long awaited meal, had an inspiring bonfire kumzitz where we sang in happiness for having the opportunity to be in Eretz Yisrael despite the continued attempts to destroy our people and our future.
